Description
The BL 5.5-inch gun was a British medium-caliber artillery piece developed just before World War II. It was designed to replace the aging 6-inch 26 cwt howitzers and 60-pounder guns that had been in service since World War I.
Introduced in 1941, the BL 5.5-inch gun became a standard piece of equipment for British and Commonwealth medium artillery regiments. It was a towed weapon, typically pulled by an AEC Matador artillery tractor. Its design featured a split-trail carriage, allowing for a wide traverse of 30 degrees to either side.
The BL 5.5-inch gun saw extensive service in the latter half of World War II, including in the North African, Italian, and Northwest European campaigns. Its reliability and effectiveness made it a popular and highly-regarded weapon. It remained in service with the British Army and other forces for many years after the war, being used in conflicts such as the Korean War, before it was eventually replaced by the FH-70 155 mm howitzer in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Set consists of 7+7 fine metal 1:600th/3mm scale miniatures.
