Description
The 7.7 cm Feldkanone 16 (FK 16) was a field gun developed by Germany during World War I to address the shortcomings of its predecessor, the 7.7 cm FK 96 n.A. While the FK 96 n.A. was a mobile and reliable weapon, the static nature of trench warfare revealed its limited range.
The FK 16 was designed to solve this problem by featuring a longer barrel (L/35 compared to the FK 96 n.A.’s L/27) and a new carriage that allowed for greater elevation. This increased the gun’s maximum range from around 7,800 meters to 9,100 meters, and even further to 10,700 meters with a specialized, streamlined shell. The gun utilized separate-loading ammunition, which allowed for variable charges to be used depending on the range, helping to conserve propellant and reduce barrel wear.
Although heavier than the older gun, which became a drawback during the war’s final, mobile phase, the FK 16 was a successful design. After World War I, many surviving FK 16s were rebarreled to the new standard 7.5 cm caliber, becoming the 7.5 cm FK 16 nA, and saw service with the German military in World War II.
Set consists of 15 fine metal 1:600th/3mm scale miniatures.
