Description

The CMP 15A truck was a Canadian-built military vehicle that served as a workhorse for British and Commonwealth forces during World War II. “CMP” stands for Canadian Military Pattern, a standardized class of military vehicles designed in Canada to British specifications. The “15A” designation refers to a 15-hundredweight (1,680 lb or 760 kg) capacity, all-wheel-drive (4×4) model.

Produced in vast numbers by both Ford and General Motors of Canada, the CMP 15A was a highly versatile vehicle. Its design featured a distinctive short, “pug-nosed” cab that was designed for more efficient shipping. This cab, particularly the No. 13 variant, also had a forward-sloping windscreen to reduce glare and make it less visible to enemy aircraft.

The CMP 15A served in a wide range of roles, including as a general service cargo truck, a troop transport, a gun tractor for light artillery, and as a base for various specialized vehicles like water tankers, wireless trucks, and ambulances. Its robust construction and all-wheel drive capabilities made it well-suited for the difficult terrain of campaigns in North Africa, Italy, and Northwest Europe. The CMP 15A, and the wider family of CMP trucks, were a vital part of the Allied war effort, with Canada’s massive production of “soft-skinned” vehicles being hailed as a crucial contribution to the Allied victory.
